      What is the 3G shutdown?

      Mobile networks across New Zealand are closing their 3G services as they upgrade to faster and more reliable 4G and 5G technology.

       

      Why is 3G being shut down?

      Shutting down 3G allows providers to improve network performance, increase capacity, and deliver better coverage using 4G and 5G.

       

      Will this affect my phone?

      It might. You could be affected if:

      • Your phone relies on 3G, or
      • Your phone does not support VoLTE (4G calling)

      Even some older 4G phones may be impacted if they use 3G for calls.

      ** Text '3G' to 550 on your mobile device to see if your device is affected by 3G shutting down.

       

      What issues might I experience?

      If your device is not compatible, you may:

      • Be unable to make or receive calls
      • Have trouble sending texts
      • Experience issues with mobile data

       

      How can I check if my phone is affected?

      Make a call and check your screen:

      • If you see VoLTE, 4G, or 5G, your phone should work normally
      • If not, your device may be affected

       

      What do I need to do?

      To stay connected, please:

      • Update your phone software
      • Turn on VoLTE (4G calling) in your settings
      • Restart your phone

      If your phone still doesn’t work, you may need to upgrade to a compatible device.

       

      Will I still be able to make emergency calls?

      No. Devices that rely on 3G will not be able to make any calls, including emergency calls, once 3G is switched off.

       

      Are other devices affected?

      Yes. Some devices that use 3G may stop working, including:

      • Medical alarms
      • Security systems
      • Older connected devices

       

      What should I do with my old device?

      We recommend recycling your old device through an approved recycling programme.
