Electricity New Connection Process

Article summary

Are you building a new home or relocating to a property that requires an electricity connection? We're here to help you navigate the process of obtaining a new electricity connection. Read on to learn about the steps involved and how to get started.

Submitting a Connection Request: To initiate the process, you need to submit a connection request. Please read through the instruction and submit your request from Forms -> Electricity forms -> New connection on MyMegatel App. You may require assistance from your electrician to complete the form accurately. If you need any assistance, please send us a Secure Message on MyMegatel App or email us at help@megatel.co.nz.

Assessing Feasibility: Upon receiving your connection request, the electricity distribution company will evaluate the feasibility of providing an electricity connection to your property. This assessment involves considering factors such as load capacity, infrastructure requirements, and safety considerations. The company will inform you about the feasibility and provide an estimated timeline for the connection.

Agreement and Costing: If the feasibility assessment is successful, you will receive an agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the electricity connection. This agreement will also include the associated costs, such as connection fees and any other applicable charges.

Network Installation: Once you have reviewed and agreed to the terms and costs in the agreement, the electricity distribution company will schedule the installation of the necessary infrastructure. Qualified technicians will handle the installation process, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.

Builder's Temporary Supply (BTS) Meter Installation: If your property requires a temporary power supply during construction or building works, a Builder's Temporary Supply (BTS) meter will be installed. This temporary meter is intended for builders working on the site and incurs additional charge. It's important to note that the BTS meter will need to be replaced with a permanent meter and relocated to a proper meter box once construction is completed.

Connection Activation: Once the BTS meter installation is successfully completed, your electricity connection will be activated, providing power supply to your property.

Billing and Customer Support: As soon as your electricity connection is activated, you can expect your electricity billing to commence promptly.

Inspection and Permanent Supply (BTS) Meter Installation: After your electrician confirms the proper installation of the meter box and prepares the Certificate of Compliance (COC) and Record of Inspection (ROI) forms after inspection, we will arrange for the installation of a permanent meter by the meter asset company. Please note that there may be an additional charge for the permanent meter installation. Ensure that you have the completed COC and ROI forms ready when the meter installer visits for the installation to avoid any turndown fees.

It's important to note that the process and requirements for obtaining an electricity new connection may vary depending on your location and the specific regulations of the electricity distribution company.
