Gas New Connection Process

Article summary

** Due to the significant reduction in gas production in New Zealand, Megatel is currently not accepting new gas connections or meter rehangs for both residential and business.

Are you considering adding a gas connection to your property? We are here to guide you through the process of a gas connection with ease and efficiency.

In case if you already have a gas meter installed at your property, you can browse more information from our website or simply contact us with your enquiry.

1. Confirm Gas Availability

The very first step is to determine if gas supply is available in your area. Visit the website of your local gas utility company (For example, Vector in Auckland) or consult with your local gas fitter to verify gas availability and check if your property falls within their service coverage area.

2. Find a Gas Fitter

You will need a qualified Gas fitter to complete your connection and to install gas appliances into your home or business. All installations must be undertaken by suitably qualified tradespeople and the installation must be certified by a certifying gas fitter.

3. Submit a connection request

Once you have confirmed gas availability, next step is to submit a connection request.

** We are currently not accepting new gas connections.

4. Accessing feasibility and quotation

Upon receiving your connection request, the gas utility company will evaluate the feasibility of providing a gas connection to your property. This assessment may involve site visits to inspect factors such as the proximity to gas pipelines and infrastructure. You will be informed about the feasibility and given an estimated timeline for the connection.

For most jobs, you will receive a quotation within 10 days from a local network company. (Please allow up to 15 days for more complex or large scale job).

5. Acceptance and payment

Once feasibility has been established, you will receive an agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the gas connection. This agreement will also include the associated costs, such as connection fees, meter installation charges, and any other applicable fees.

You have 60 days (2 months) to accept and pay for the quotation.

6. Installation and inspection

Once payment and the acceptance has been received, it generally takes 4-6 weeks (commercial property: 6 to 8 weeks) to complete, however in periods of high demand it may take up to 8 weeks.

The gas utility company will schedule the installation of the gas meter and the necessary infrastructure. Trained technicians will carry out the installation process, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Following installation, an inspection will be conducted to verify the proper functioning of the gas connection.

7. Gas connection activation and billing

Upon successful installation and inspection, your gas connection will be activated. You can expect your gas billing to commence promptly.

It is important to note that the process and requirements for obtaining a gas new connection may vary depending on your location and the specific regulations of the gas utility company.

APPROVED RESIDENTIAL CONNECTION PIPE LOCATIONS

The gas connection must be located at the front of the property, or no more than 3m down the side.
