How do I choose the right electricity plan?
- 1 Minute to read
Being on the right electricity plan for your home could save you money.
We offer Standard User and Low User plan options for most of our residential electricity plans (note the Low User plan is only available at your primary residence and does not apply to secondary dwellings, holiday homes, construction property or businesses).
Your best plan option depends on the amount of electricity you use.
Standard User plan
Generally, this is the best plan for higher energy users who use more than 8,000 kWh of electricity a year (or more than 9,000 in parts of the lower South Island).
This plan has a higher daily charge and a lower variable charge compared to the Low User plan.
Low User plan
Generally, this is the most suitable plan if you use less than 8,000 kWh of electricity a year (or 9,000 kWh in parts of the lower South Island including Christchurch but excluding the West Coast).
The plan has a lower daily charge and a higher variable charge compared to the Standard User Plan. It is only available at your primary residence.
Important note : from 1 April 2022 Low User plans will start being phased out and the daily charge on all Low User plans will increase to 60 cents per day. Please see the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment's website for more information.
To help you decide which electricity plan might suit you best, you should tell us about how you usually use energy in your household and your past electricity consumption.
All our plans include a daily fixed charge and variable electricity usage charge(s), which are based on your meter type and your network’s pricing category. Together these charges show how many days you have been billed and the amount of electricity you have used. Our variable rates include the Electricity Levy.
