VoLTE calling on Your Mobile Phone

Article summary

What is VoLTE?

VoLTE, which stands for Voice over LTE (LTE refers to the technical name for 4G), represents the next step in mobile voice communication. Unlike traditional voice calls that have relied on the 3G network for over a decade, VoLTE enables voice calls to be made directly over the 4G network.

To use VoLTE, your phone must support it. Even if your device is 4G capable, it may still revert to 3G for calls unless it specifically supports VoLTE functionality. Without this support, the benefits of 4G for voice services can’t be fully utilized.

VoLTE Support for Megatel customers

Megatel mobile service operates within the Spark network coverage.

Mobile network operators like Spark have been partnering with phone manufacturers to enable VoLTE on a broad range of devices, including existing models, for use on New Zealand's 4G networks.

How do I change VoLTE setting in my mobile device?

It is likely that it's enabled by default for many devices that support VoLTE. However, you may need to manually configure it in your device.

For your iPhone device: Settings -> Mobile -> Mobile Data Options -> Voice and Data -> Tick either 5G or 4G and make sure that VoLTE is enabled.

For your Android device: Settings -> Connections -> Mobile networks -> Make sure that network mode is either 5G or 4G auto connect with VoLTE calls enabled

** If you cannot find the VoLTE option in your mobile setting, your device may not support VoLTE.

** If you are using dual SIM (for example, one eSIM and one physical SIM), ensure to choose the correct SIM for the VoLTE setting.

Using VoLTE while Roaming with Megatel (Spark mobile network)

As international mobile carriers begin phasing out the 2G and 3G networks (eg, all 3G networks in Australia have shutdown since October 2024), Spark is working to ensure that customers can still make calls while overseas. This involves enabling VoLTE roaming on popular mobile phone models and coordinating with global roaming partners to roll out VoLTE capabilities on their networks. Without a mobile device that supports VoLTE, you won't be able to use voice services while overseas roaming.

What do I do if my mobile device doesn't support VoLTE?

If your mobile device doesn't support VoLTE, you may still be able to use data and text but won't be able to make voice calls in areas where there is no 3G or 2G available, including to emergency service numbers. Spark is phasing out the 3G network and some rural areas only have 4G coverage.

Benefits of using VoLTE

Enhanced Coverage: Enjoy the ability to make calls over Spark’s 4G network, including access to newly expanded 4G-only areas delivered through the Rural Connectivity Group (RCG). To see if you're covered, visit spark.co.nz/4g.

Superior Call Quality: Experience crystal-clear voice calls that make it feel like you're speaking face-to-face, with reduced background noise for a more natural conversation.

Seamless 4G Multitasking: Stay connected without interruptions—use your apps, browse the web, and stream content at 4G speeds even while you’re on a call.

Quicker Call Setup: Get connected faster. VoLTE reduces call setup time, so your calls begin with minimal delay.

Clearer Speakerphone Experience: Hear every voice distinctly during speakerphone calls, making it easier to recognize who’s speaking—even in group conversations.
